EUPATI-UK Network and ABPI 2nd International Conference

EUPATI-UK Network and ABPI 2nd International Conference 24th June 2016 –Royal College of Physicians, London

Patients, industry and academia joining forces to deliver patient-centric research. No research about us without us – Patients at the core of medical research & development

On 24 June, EUPATI UK in partnership with the Association of British Pharmaceutical Industries (ABPI) hosted a one-day patient involvement conference. The purpose was two-fold, first to highlight the EUPATI toolbox and resources now available to empower patients and patient organisations to be better informed and involved in all aspect of medicine development. Second to facilitate how industry might strengthen the patient voice and bring the lived experience, to enrich the medicines development process and ensure a patient-centric approach.

Irene Oldfather, Director at The Health and Social Care ALLIANCE Scotland and Chair of EUPATI-UK welcomed everyone to the conference. The irony of hosting a successful EU programme was not missed with the morning news of BREXIT.

“Despite being the day after the UK Brexit decision there was commitment and enthusiasm to continue to work together to share knowledge and experience and to find solutions to common problems.  The ALLIANCE is committed to an agenda that puts people at the heart of all we do and to work together to ensure that they are full partners in their health and wellbeing”

Unperturbed Nicola Bedlington, European Patients’ Forum Secretary General gave an informative talk of the journey thus far and the adventure that still lies ahead in achieving effective patient partnerships within the pharmaceutical industry. The EUPATI Fellows and Trainees then provided their experiences of actively influencing research and development in the UK and welcomed industry to seek them out as they are keen to utilise the knowledge they have gained from their experiences from the World-leading patient training they have received from EUPATI. Members of GenerationR, a National Young Persons’ Advisory Group, chaired a panel comprising representatives from the Pharmaceutical industry, NIHR, the NIHR Clinical Research Network, charity sector and NHS and academia. There is clearly a shared vision that patient centric research is the future and closer working in partnership is desired and achievable.

From feedback received, the event was a resounding success and met the learning objectives for the vast majority. We look forward to exploring further opportunities of working with ABPI to continue to aid building strategic partnerships with well-informed patients and patient advocates and sustain the excellent work of EUPATI and grow its network.

“I think it is a really positive event and a great way to get patients, regulators and industry at the same table”

“A great event which demonstrated the public being at the centre of public involvement in research, and how EUPATI has made this possible”.
